Administration and usage of local anaesthetics

Thanks for choosing Paste Dental Belfast for your dental needs.

We want you to be fully aware of the risks involved with local anaesthetics during your procedure. So, make sure you read this consent form carefully and ask any questions you may have before signing.

Local anaesthetic is pretty standard in dental procedures to numb the area being treated, reducing pain and discomfort during the procedure. But like any medical procedure, there are risks involved with the use of local anaesthetic.

Here are some of the risks you should be aware of:

  • Nerve damage: Although rare, nerve damage is a possibility during the administration of local anaesthetic. This could lead to numbness, tingling, or pain in the affected area.

  • Allergic reactions: In some cases, patients may experience an allergic reaction to local anaesthetic, causing hives, swelling, or breathing difficulties.

  • Haematoma: Rarely, the injection site may bleed, leading to a collection of blood under the skin known as a haematoma.

  • Infection: While uncommon, there is a risk of infection associated with the administration of local anaesthetic.

Administering local anaesthetic for upper teeth comes with the risk of puncturing the sinus cavity, leading to sinus issues. Meanwhile, for lower teeth, there's a possibility of temporary or permanent nerve damage that may result in numbness or tingling in the lower lip or tongue.

At Paste Dental Belfast, we may also use intra-osseous local anaesthetic with the QuickSleeper device. While this method is generally safe, there is still a risk of bleeding, infection, nerve damage, and allergic reactions.

Please note that these risks aren't unique to Paste Dental Belfast, but they're associated with the use of local anaesthetic in general.

By digitally signing your estimate and consent email, you acknowledge that you've read and understood the risks associated with the use of local anaesthetic during your dental procedure. You also understand that you can ask any questions you have about the procedure and that you may withdraw your consent at any time.
